How do we describe the past month? Overwhelming – yes. Full of wonder and God’s grace – yes. We received calls too numerous to count and took over 80 extended intake interviews. Most were for utility assistance – requests totaling well over $1000 per day! The need was (and is) staggering and we are only just beginning to develop relationships with partner hurches to be able to respond in some way to those calling in.
We will never have enough money, but that is not really what Love in the Name of Christ is about anyway. As we tell those who call – we are more about forming long‐term relationships than about emergency cash assistance. We ant to spend time with you, look together with you at your life situation and see how we can best help. We want to offer you prayer and a first time or deeper connection with a local church. Our first series of ‘Love Stories’ will perhaps best explain how Love INC works…
Dahne Yeager, Director of Interfaith Day Center, referred a man who was dropped off in Columbia by relatives who refused to take him back to his home in Iowa following his son's funeral in Arkansas. The man was particularly desperate to get home as he had the opportunity to start a permanent job after working for a temp agency for seven months. We verified the story with his Iowa employer but did not have the financial resources to buy the $91 bus ticket. While several of us were praying in the office that evening about this and other needs, the Iowa employer called to tell us that co‐workers had taken up a collection and would reimburse us if we would buy the ticket and help the man get on his way. How much meaningful it was for this hurting man to receive the funds, through a show of support from his co‐workers rather than rom strangers he would never see again! After assisting with the ticket purchase we received the promised eimbursement and the following letter from the employer:
I want to give a letter of recommendation and thanks to our friends at Love in the Name of Christ. We had a friend that got stranded in Columbia while attending a son’s funeral. The son had been brutally shot and we all know that this situation is tasking and trying. Our friend was in dire straits and needed a hand up. The group at Love INC jumped in and aided him in his time of need. It is service in HIS name that makes this organization shine. If there is anything you can personally do to aid this group I would personally appreciate it, they need it.
