Budgeting classes were one of the first gap ministries offered by Love In the Name of Christ. Four classes have been held with a total of 24 individuals attending. Topics covered in the classes included how to set up a budget, budgeting tips and tricks, frugal buying, how to manage a checking account and what to ask when setting up a new bank account. Following the budget class, each class member can sign up for a total of four mentoring sessions to work on their budget and their specific financial situation. The next budget class will be held on Aug 12 from 10-12AM at Centerpoint Church on the lower level of the Kelly Plaza, 1900 N. Providence Rd. The evening class will be held on Aug 19 from 5:30-7:30PM at Centerpoint Church. Those interested in attending the budget class, call 256-7662. Classes are free but class size is limited. Please call to register. These classes are for individuals who have not yet taken the Love INC budgeting class. An eight-week budgeting class is being planned which will go more in depth with budgeting and financial needs and will be open to those who have already attended a Love INC budget class. Dates will be announced later.
During the first three months of operation, Love INC of Columbia took 145 intake calls. Some of needs we were able to meet included such things as home repairs; transportation for immigration appointments; assistance with job search and resumes; referrals for housing, clothing and food assistance; help with bus passes; assistance with furniture needs; problem-solving; relocation assistance; home visits; church referrals and information about agency assistance and prayer. Although Love INC has no emergency funds, some clients were helped through benevolence funds from area churches. Love INC volunteers take information regarding needs and verify that information prior to connecting individuals with church resources. The main goal of Love INC is to connect individuals with churches that can help meet their spiritual needs, as well as assist with their physical needs.
A 64-year old woman with numerous health issues called saying she would soon be evicted from her mobile home park for inability to maintain the exterior siding on her mobile home. Volunteers raised funds to purchase needed materials at a reduced cost and installed the siding on her mobile home making it able for her to stay in her home.
A 56-year old woman who is a retired minister with many health issues called with several minor home repair needs. Volunteers helped her by repairing a ceiling fan, fixing a lock and pulling up carpet that contributed to her allergy issues. Other volunteers are planning on helping her with other needs such as lawn care, window washing and grocery shopping.
Two single women with children needed help moving across town. Churches they are moving near are providing manpower to help them move larger items.
